DISTANCE LEARNING

AND THE JSCC LIBRARY

WELCOME to the

JAMES SPRUNT COMMUNITY COLLEGE

LIBRARY

DISTANCE LEARNING STUDENTS

The Library provides informational services for all JSCC students, regardless of location. Students enrolled in telecourse, or courses taught via the Internet are welcome to use the campus library. However, library services will be provided over the Internet.

HOURS: Monday - Thursday 8 am - 8pm; Friday 8 am - 4 pm; closed on weekends. Semester breaks 8 am - pm.

TELEPHONE: Circulation/Reference Desk 910-296-2519.

LIBRARY CARD: All James Sprunt Community College students, faculty and staff, and all Duplin County residents 16 years of age or older may apply to receive a library card. An application card must be completed and on file. Currently, all students still need to come by the library to complete an application card.

CIRCULATION: Books are checked out for 3 weeks and may be renewed 1 time if no one has requested the item. A student may have only 8 books checked out. Fines are 10 cents per day per book, up to $5.00.

The James Sprunt Community College Library patron is allowed a three-week circulation period. At the end of the circulation period, the student is charged an overdue fine as determined by the Library for each day the book is overdue while the school is in operation. After the item is a week overdue, the patron will be mailed a series of three notices, one per week, listing the title of the overdue item(s). The patron may also be notified by phone of his/her overdue status. If the item is still unreturned after mailing the three notices, the patron will be sent a letter informing him/her in detail of the library overdue policy and its consequences. It will list the amount owed to the Library. After thirty days, a "HOLD" notice will be sent to Student Services. The student will not be allowed to pre-register, register, receive grades, diploma or transcripts. If the student then clears his/her account with the Library, a Library "CLEARANCE" notice will be sent to student Services. If after ninety days , the student has not cleared his account, a "DEBT" notice for the replacement of the book will be sent to the Office of Administrative and Fiscal Services. A Library Book Return box is located outside the Boyette Building near the parking area for easy book return.

CATALOG: Our on-line public access catalog (OPAC or PAC) is called CCLINC, Community College Libraries in North Carolina. It accesses the catalogs of 40 community colleges/institutes. The library uses the Library of Congress Classification System.

To access the Internet version of CCLINC your computer must be Java enabled. If you use Netscape 4 (Communicator) or Explorer you should be able to access CCLINC at www.cclinc.ncccs.cc.nc.us.

Scroll down the list of community colleges until you find JSCC. Click on JSCC. At the next screen click on Library catalog to search the catalog. From here you may search using the title, author, subject or keyword.

NCLIVE: North Carolina Libraries and Virtual Education. Selected electronic resources available only at community colleges, universities of the UNC system, some private colleges and universities, and public libraries of North Carolina. This is the best place to start searching for magazine articles for research papers.

Distance Learning Students must request authorization and password from the library staff. Students must present their registration receipt and sign an agreement stating that you will not give NCLIVE authorization and passwords to anyone else including fellow JSCC students. Authorization and passwords are good until early January, 2000. It is the student's responsibility to request the new passwords.
