Subscribing to the philosophy of "life-long learning," the Continuing Education Division offers a wide range of courses and programs for adults of all ages and interests.

Courses are offered in 10 broad program areas: occupational extension, community services, self-supporting, Adult Basic Education, General Education Development (GED) preparation, Adult High School Diploma Program, compensatory education, English as a Second Language, cultural and civic activities, as well as workshops and seminars provided through the Small Business Center.

Each course is complete within itself and may not be applied to meet requirements for an Associate Degree, diploma or certificate.

The Continuing Education Department offers courses in Adult Basic Education, GED, Occupational Extension, Community Services and Self-Supporting areas. Classes are open to anyone 18 years of age or older. Classes meet both on and off campus. Registration is held at the first class session (ABE students may register at any time) and class size often is limited. A class space may be reserved by contacting the Continuing Education Department prior to the first class meeting. James Sprunt Community College reserves the right to cancel any class because of insufficient enrollment.

Occupational extension classes require a registration fee of $50 to $65, depending on course length. Community Services and Self-Supporting classes are on a sliding fee scale, depending upon the type and duration of the class. Students must bring their Social Security numbers to register for a class, and should be prepared to pay registration fees by cash or check (correct change please). There is no fee for Community Service or Occupational Extension classes for persons over 65 years of age, ABE, GED, or ESL students. Students may be required to purchase textbooks or supplies for the class. The ABE Program is designed to improve basic reading, English and math skills. The GED Program provides preparation for the GED (high school equivalency) exam.

Students may enroll in the same occupational extension course no more than two times within a five-year period at the specified registration fee unless the course is required for licensing or certification purposes. Students who enroll in the same course more than two times and the course is not required for licensing or certification are required to pay the full amount ($4.69 per class hour or the specified registration fee, whichever is greater) of the per hour instructional cost. It is the student's responsibility to notify the college at the time of enrollment if they have taken the same course two or more times in a five-year period.

Students may receive a 75% refund if they withdraw and request a refund prior to the official 10% point of a class scheduled to meet five or more times. Students may also receive a 75% refund if they request withdrawal and a refund on or before the first class for those classes that meet fewer than five times. For classes conducted on a contact hour basis, students may request withdrawal and a refund within 10 calendar days from the first scheduled day of class. Refunds are not available for community service or self-supporting classes. Requests for a refund must be submitted in writing. Forms are available from the course instructor or the Continuing Education Division (910-296-2460).

The Continuing Education Department offers classes throughout the county at many different locations. The listing here is a partial schedule of offerings planned for the upcoming semester. Classes may be offered in many areas based on the interests and suggestions of local citizens, provided class size is sufficient and an instructor is available.
